It is said that the name Amazonite was originally derived from the theory that it was mined in the Amazon River, but it was later discovered to be a different mineral, and there is an interesting story behind it, in that it is actually mined in a different location. It has sometimes been mistaken for nephrite, turquoise, or jade.
