What is Demantoid Garnet? Differences from Green Garnet and its Characteristics
Two types of green garnet
There are two main types of green garnet gemstones .
- Tsavorite (Green Garnet)
- Demantoid Garnet
These are often collectively referred to as "green garnets", but are in fact different types of garnets. Demantoid garnet in particular should be clearly distinguished from tsavorite.
Origin of the name Demantoid Garnet
"Demantoid" means **"diamond-like" in Dutch.** As its name suggests, demantoid garnet has a very high refractive index and a degree of dispersion that is said to exceed that of diamonds, and depending on the cut it can shine like a diamond.
Demantoid Garnet Rarity and Inclusions
What are horsetail inclusions?
In addition to its beautiful brilliance, demantoid garnet is known for the horsetail inclusions it contains. These are fibrous inclusions unique to demantoid garnets from the Ural Mountains in Russia, and are shaped like a horse's tail or hair.
However, too many inclusions can detract from the brilliance of the stone, so crystals with just the right amount of horsetail inclusions are especially prized.
Conditions for good quality demantoid garnet
The best quality Russian demantoid garnets meet the following criteria:
- Minimal horsetail inclusion
- Amazing chrome green color
- A crystal with a strong shine
Demantoid garnets that meet these criteria are extremely rare, and those over 1 carat are rarely seen on the market.
The rarity of large demantoid garnets
Demantoid garnets are usually small, less than 1 carat, and anything over 1 carat is very rare . Furthermore, anything over 2 carats is classified as premium class , and is considered a very valuable and expensive gemstone.
