[Loose stone identification certificate included] A rare large stone of 3 carats or more Hyalite Opal (Glass Opal) 3.57 CT
Hyalite opal is derived from the Greek word hualos, which means glass. Unlike precious opals, which have play of color like black opals and Mexican opals, common opals do not have play of color. Because of its glass-like appearance, it is commonly known as glass opal and is one of the most difficult opal species to produce. It is characterized by unique bubble-like and rhytidic inclusions. It gives the impression of being similar to Moldavite, a famous natural glass. Hyalite raw stones have the appearance of a collection of small, transparent lumps that resemble glass particles, and look like drops of water that have fallen one by one and solidified. The most interesting feature of hyalite is that it contains trace amounts of uranium, which causes it to emit a neon green color when exposed to ultraviolet light (black light). The conditions for crystal formation are extremely strict and large stones are rarely produced, making gem-quality stones of 3 carats or more extremely valuable. This is a rare opal that we would recommend as part of your collection. |
